Cancel the Cuts!

Here are a few things you can do to voice your opposition to the BC Government's funding cuts to Community-Based HIV/AIDS Services:

1) Email Premier Campbell and your MLA

Email Premier Gordon Campbell and your MLA directly. We've set up a sample letter and form. It takes only one minute but it will make a lifetime of difference. It's easy: Send your email now.

2) Mail your own handwritten or typed letter to your MLA.

Did you know that governments equate one letter to represent 100 people's opinion around an issue? Your letter can make all the difference.

Posted letters send a stronger message to decision makers than emails as they imply that more effort has been taken. They're still quick and easy to do and only cost the price of a stamp. We've put together a sample letter (Microsoft Word) that you can modify. Please send yours today.

3) Put up a poster

Post the Cancel The Cuts poster. Download your copy here.

4) Display a link on your website

Put some text with a link to us or a Cancel the Cuts! badge on your website and Facebook page. Please contact us to let us know where you linked to us.

5) Pass this on. Tell your friends to tell their friends.

Personalize this message and send it to everyone on all of your email lists—professional and personal. The government needs to hear from everyone who cares about the health of our province—friends, family, sports team members, church goers, doctors, volunteers, donors, colleagues and neighbours. Let them know that they can really make a difference by taking 5 minutes to send a letter or email to the BC Government.

Make it your goal to tell 5 friends about this campaign and ask them in turn to tell 5 people. This is the most effective way to create positive change.

Use the "Share This" button at the top of this page to spread the word.

6) Tweet, Facebook, and use your other Social Networks

When you post to Twitter about this issue, append your message with #cancelthecuts. Also, please join our Facebook group. You could even change your profile picture to one of the Cancel the Cuts! badges.

7) Attend our public event and WEAR RED!

Come down to the North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery on December 18th at 12pm. Wear Red and let your voice be heard!

What do we hope to achieve with your help?

We have only a few more weeks in which to influence discussions and decisions around the budget due in early March. All government funding for Community AIDS Services must be reinstated to 2008/2009 levels.

A continual torrent of letters, emails and community-based activism will ensure that the decision-makers in Victoria hear our message loud and clear. These funds need to be reinstated immediately so Community AIDS Services can go back to what they do best: providing support, education and harm reduction in our community.

HIV infections will go up

"Fewer HIV/AIDS programs will absolutely result in increased infection rates...For the government to think that they will be saving money by cutting HIV/AIDS programs is ludicrous. The Province should triple funding for HIV/AIDS CBHO’s rather than make cuts."

—Dr. Mark Tyndall, Program Director, Epidemiology, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and Head, Division of Infectious Diseases, Providence Health Care

We cannot let this momentum wane

Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, said she hopes tough economic times will not lead to a reduced spending on HIV-AIDS prevention and treatment because the results are only now really being seen. "International and national investment in HIV treatment scale-up has yielded concrete and measurable results," she said. "We cannot let this momentum wane. Now is the time to redouble our efforts, and save many more lives."
